Chapter 6 Vocabulary

1. Rhythm

This was done by one of my favorite Abstract artists, Jackson Pollock. I enjoy the repetitive motion in his work because it not only creates an interesting composition, it also presents bold characteristics that stand out on their own, despite the similarities they may have.

2. Suprematism

Suprematism was a style of art that I was unfamiliar with, so I decided to do some more research on it. The art movement was started by Kasimir Malevich, so I thought it would be appropriate to show one of his works as an example.

Chapter 5 Vocabulary

1. Classical

 I'm a bit of a mythology hound, so I took a more literal approach to this term. This piece is a portrayal of Pygmalion and Galatea. In Roman mythology, Pygmalion was a sculptor who had carved a sculpture so beautiful, he fell in love with it.

2. Mandala

Apart from mythology, I also have an interest in Buddhist culture. This is an example of Mandala art I found online.

1. Proportion

 This is done by one of my favorite artists Jenny Saville, who does amazing portrayals of large-figured women.

2. Surrealism

 Done by one of the masters of Surrealism, Salvador Dali. I had the privilege of seeing this piece at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Chapter 3 Vocabulary

1. Focal Point

 This is a photograph I had taken during my trip out West.  It was taken at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. This particular group of mountains is called the Cathedral Group.

"These peaks have been called the Cathedral Group...more evident here than in many of the great cathedrals of men is the Gothic note.  It is seen in the profiles of the countless firs and spruces congregated like worshippers on the lower slopes; it reappears higher in the converging lines of spire rising beyond spire; it attains supreme expression in the figures of the peaks themselves that, towering above all else, with pointed summits directs one's vision and thoughts yet higher." - Fritiof Fryxwell


2. Value

 This was done by one of my favorite photographers, Joel Peter Witkin. I find his incorporation of such strange and grotesque elements to be absolutely beautiful and the theatrical presence in his work is truly incredible.

This piece is actually on display at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia.
